The strawberry is not a true berry. Botanically, it is an accessory fruit — what we eat is the swollen receptacle of the flower. Every tiny seed on its surface is a fruit in its own right.
First cultivated in Brittany, 1750s. A cross between a Chilean and a North American wild species. Nobody planned it.
